Community Benefits of Electric Vehicles: National Drive Electric Week

Fall is on the horizon and summer 2023 will soon be a thing of the past. With the heat slowly leaving us, it’s time to go out and explore again! If you’re looking for something to do in the area, the Dallas-Fort Worth Clean Cities Coalition (DWCC) is hosting a National Drive Electric Week (NDEW) event at the Tanger Outlets in Fort Worth on October 1, 2023. NDEW is a nationwide celebration that aims to raise awareness of the many benefits of all-electric and plug in hybrid cars and more! Check out the benefits of electric vehicles listed below:

    EVs Save Lives

Motor vehicles contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone. This can trigger health problems such as aggravated asthma and reduced lung capacity. On the other hand, electric vehicles produce little to zero emissions. A study published by Science of the Total Environment found that every 20 zero-emission vehicles per 1,000 people in a zip code led to a 3.2 percent drop in the rate of emergency room visits. EVs can save lives and improve the overall health of your community.

    Economic Savings

Ditch the gas pump and charge your car at home! Doing this saves time and money. According to a study from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, EV owners can save as much as $14,500 on fuel cars by owning an electric vehicle for 15 years. Additionally, if you place in service a new plug-in electric vehicle (EV) or fuel cell vehicle (FCV) in 2023 or after you might be able to qualify for a clean vehicle tax credit. New vehicles bought in 2023 or after could get up to $7,500 under Internal Revenue code 30D. You not only get to save money, you’re also able to earn money by owning a qualified electric vehicle!

With electric vehicles there’s no need to put money aside for oil changes or gas stops which leads to lower maintenance costs. So, although electric vehicles tend to be on the pricier side, these lower maintenance costs offset the amount you pay for the vehicle overtime.

    Transform your Community

We are increasingly seeing more electric vehicles on the road such as Tesla, Polestar, and traditional automobile manufacturers like BMW’s all electric vehicle line. Vehicle electrification could help reduce noise pollution in your community among other benefits like improved public health.

Increased emissions have significant long-term effects in and outside of your community such as global warming, the shrinking of glaciers, wildfires, and droughts. During a natural disaster, EVs like the Ford F-150 Lightning have the power to power your house!

If you’re interested in expanding your knowledge about electric vehicles, don’t miss out on the NDEW event on October 1st, 2023! Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy food, play games, win prizes, and engage with community members and industry professionals involved with sustainability and clean transportation.
