How time flies! As the crisp November air settles in, it’s a timely reminder of the importance of the air we breathe, especially in bustling regions like North Texas. Although, ozone season is ending, there are businesses working year-round to promote cleaner air and sustainable practices in your region. It’s important to recognize those who strive to create a sustainable environment for future generations. Check out how North Texas is making a difference!
Forward Thinking Drives Change
Dallas Fort-Worth Clean Cities Coalition works closely with local fleets to promote practices and decisions to reduce transportation energy use and improve air quality. The coalition recognizes fleets annually that go the extra mile to reduce petroleum and improve the air all North Texans breathe. As we navigate November, let’s acknowledge and support the DFW Clean Cities Coalition!
At the forefront with the DFW Clean Cities Coalition is Texas Campaign for the Environment. This campaign empowers Texans to fight pollution through sustained grassroots, organizing campaigns that shift corporate and governmental policy. Through canvassing and reaching over 400,000 homes, it fosters a sense of responsibility for residents across Texas.
Patagonia Dallas, the outdoor clothing company, is a Dallas certified “Green Business”. The store diverts over 85% of the waste generated on site. Patagonia’s unique approach to organically scouring materials and ethical production sets them apart from fast-fashion businesses. Their efforts set a high standard within the clothing industry as they work to significantly reduce environmental impact and improve air quality.
Green Transportation Alternatives
As the autumn leaves fall, the commitment to cleaner air is on the rise. In North Texas, Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), Trinity Metro, and Denton Country Transportation Authority (DCTA) are all at the forefront of this movement.
DART’s multimodal transportation system takes you around Dallas, Texas and its 12 surrounding cities. This sustainable system is not only affordable and reliable, but also enhances the quality of life.
Trinity Metro, the public transportation provider for Tarrant County, includes a bus network and jointly owns and operates Trinity Railway Express with DART.
DCTA offers mobility options to the Denton and Lewisville region and is committed to improving mobility and air quality.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, public transportation uses less fuel and produces lower levels of carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOC), and carbon dioxide (CO2) per passenger mile relative to private vehicles.
Encouraging alternative modes for transportation, such as biking and walking, not only improves air quality but also promotes a healthier lifestyle.
BCycle is one of many bike sharing platforms in the region. Their bicycles get you around quicker than ever before with their optional pedal assist! Whether you’re in Fort Worth or Dallas, bike sharing is an inexpensive and environmentally friendly way to get around.
If your trip is less than three miles, consider taking a scenic route. Walking improves your physical well-being and reduces your carbon footprint! According to a 2021 study for the Bureau of Transportation Statistics focused on daily trips, 52% of all trips including all modes of transportation were less than three miles.
The EV Revolution
Elective vehicles such as Tesla, Polestar and BMW electric vehicles (EVs) are taking over North Texas. The best part is that some, all electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles qualify for a federal tax credit with some states offering additional incentives for purchasing an EV. These initiatives help create a sustainable environment while saving and earning money!
As November sweeps in, let’s appreciate the efforts of programs and businesses that understand the importance of sustainable transportation. Additionally, whether it’s walking to the nearest store, supporting sustainable clothing brands, or riding on DART, you too can be a part of the change.
